A big sky afternoon, coming down Bayridge Drive after getting groceries. Driving south, coming over the crest of the rise you see the lake in front of you with its perspective strangely compressed, as if it's been painted on a backdrop. In Lake Ontario Park the machines are working away...

I don't suppose I shall ever tire of looking at trains, although I don't lean towards writing down their numbers or other railroad obsessions. But, their thundering weight and brute power fascinate me. Locomotives just do one thing: they pull really, really hard. They don't even steer! Few things are as straightforward as that.

I arrived a bit early for the dentist, and looked up Princess St from the Canadian Tire there. The garden centre getting stocked up for the season. Big piles of discarded packing lying around. A garden seems so firmly "of its place" that it's easy to forget that so much of it is trucked in from somewhere else.
